If you are currently in the process of modifying your SOLIDWORKS installation to change its serial number, or maybe even add and remove certain products, you may run into this error on the summary page: The source folder is not versioned properly.

Luckily, this problem has a fix. You don’t even need to exit the Installation Manager to implement it. Once you have applied the steps below, you can return to the window to complete the modification.

As the error message describes, you need to have the “swdata99.id” or “swdata1.id” file, which matches the version of the Installation Manager.

This file can be created from scratch, by following these steps:

  1. Navigate to the location specified by the error, and check if there already is a “swdata99.id” or “swdata1.id” present. If so, delete or rename it.
  2. Go to the View tab of your File Explorer and enable the “File Name Extensions” box in the Show/Hide section.enable extensions in solidworks
  3. Open NotePad from the Start Menu.
  4. In your new text document, type in the version of SOLIDWORKS which you are using, in the following format:

SOLIDWORKS 20XX SP0X

The header of your Installation Manager also shows the version and service pack, which you can use as a reference. Here are some examples:

SOLIDWORKS 2020 SP04

SOLIDWORKS 2021 SP05.1

SOLIDWORKS 2023 SP0.1

  1. Save the file as “swdata99” in the location specified by the error.
  2. Rename the file extension from “swdata99.txt” to ‘swdata99.id”.
  3. Go back to your Installation Manager, hit “OK” on the error message and try clicking the “Modify” button again.

If you’ve completed the steps above correctly, the Installation Manager should proceed to the next stage. If you run into any further issues or another SOLIDWORKS installation error with the modification process, please contact your VAR.
