If you try to launch SOLIDWORKS and receive an error message stating a “Standalone license file failure” you likely have a temporary license file on your machine preventing SOLIDWORKS from opening.

Standalone license file failure
This error is typically caused by a SOLIDWORKS temporary license file on the machine that expired before being removed. A temporary license file will override the newly installed license, so it must be properly removed once the license file has expired so that the correct license can be used when launching SOLIDWORKS. Luckily, a few quick steps should resolve the error and get your SOLIDWORKS back up and running.
Steps to solve the “Standalone license file failure”
- In Windows File Explorer navigate to your C:\ProgramData\SOLIDWORKS folder. If you do not see your ProgramData folder, it may be hidden. Please see the instructions to make that folder visible here.
- Within the SOLIDWORKS folder, find the “SolidWorksStandaloneLic.lic” file and either remove or rename it. The license file can be deleted, moved to a different folder, or renamed “SolidWorksStandaloneLic_old.lic” for example.
- Now, navigate to your C:\Program Files\SolidWorks Corp\SOLIDWORKS folder. If there is also a “SolidWorksStandaloneLic.lic” file found in this folder, remove or rename it.
- Relaunch SolidWorks and the “Standalone license file failure” error should no longer appear.
If the error still appears after following the steps above, then a clean uninstall and reinstall of SOLIDWORKS is suggested to fully eliminate any corrupted settings and/or registries that could be preventing SOLIDWORKS from launching.
